So what is a good Organic, Vegan Protein Shake? A few weeks ago, as a result of some changes in my bloodwork and my husband’s bloodwork, we decided to cut back substantially on our red meat intake. So I decided to research the Vegan Protein Powders and I came up with two really good clean, organic Vegan shakes. Garden of Life Raw Protein and Vega One Protein and Greens. So let me back up. All of us, particularly those of us 50 and up, should be drinking a shake. A good rule of thumb is 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. There was a time when I thought I was getting enough protein and then I really began to research what I should be consuming on a daily basis to build and maintain muscle. So for me, that is about 125 grams of protein. Just to give you an idea how difficult that is to get in your daily food intake, think of a 4 oz serving of chicken…just 28 grams. So even if you manage to shovel down 3 servings in a day, you would only be up to 84 grams of protein. So here’s my point, protein builds and maintains muscle, muscle burns more fat… and you will be a fat burning furnace with the more muscle you can build and maintain. We typically lose 5% of our muscle mass every 10 years after 35 if we don’t do anything about it.
So if you want to be stronger, put some zip in your metabolism and keep body fat to a minimum, start with a healthy whole foods diet and add in a quality organic shake like Vega one with protein and greens or Garden of Life Raw Protein. Have one between meals or before you go to bed at night. I like the Vegan shakes because they are meant to be mixed with water, so it makes it easy for me to just bring along the powder in a baggie when I am on the road all day and mix with water.
